Destinations - Historic Milton
Milton, one of the oldest towns in Florida, is located just north of Navarre along the shores of the Blackwater River. Spend a day and explore the historic district, the Riverwalk Park, or celebrate with the locals during one of its many small-town celebrations.
Established in 1825 as a trading post on the Blackwater River, Milton's rich history is matched only by its small-town charm. If you want to mix history and nature, Milton is the vacation headquarters for you.
Milton's Downtown Historic District offers visitors several historical attractions. Self-guided tour maps are available for a day of exploration.
While its Historic District offers charming historic attractions such as the Imogene Theatre and the L& N Train Museum, the outskirts of Milton border the Blackwater River State Forest and offer a gateway to hiking, biking, fishing, and canoeing enthusiasts. The Blackwater Heritage Trail, following the route of the old Florida-Alabama Railroad, built in 1900, invites you to step back in time with a scenic tour for hikers, joggers and bikers.
Bagdad
Just south of Milton is the historic village of Bagdad, home to beautifully renovated pre-Civil War- era homes.
As early as 1840, Bagdad was a thriving port producing and shipping more yellow pine lumber than any port in the world. By 1900, the Milton and Bagdad Village area had become one of the most industrialized areas in the state of Florida.
Once a thriving sawmill and shipbuilding center, Bagdad is now a quaint reminder of small town life in the Deep South decades ago. In addition to private historic homes, visitors can enjoy a local museum which is housed in a small historic church, an 1867 post office, and a historic cemetery containing vaults, headstones and iron works marking the graves of sawmill owners, workers and veterans of the Civil War dating back to the mid 1800’s.
